A 43-year-old woman, Anthonia Alhassan, has prayed a Makurdi Magistrate’s Court to dissolve her marriage to Francis Alhassan for his alleged failure to perform his conjugal obligations.
Anthonia told the court that she married Alhassan in 1997 under the Native Laws and Customs of the Idoma people of Benue State.
She added that the marriage was not blessed with any child and attributed this to her husband’s inconsistency in performing his conjugal duties at the appropriate times.
She said that a few years into their marriage, they had to live apart due to the nature of their jobs, adding that they had a good relationship in spite of that.
Anthonia said the problem started in 2006 when her husband got married to another woman.
She said: “My husband married another woman in 2006 and immediately stopped performing his conjugal duties to me. He even refused to visit or allow me to visit him where he stays with his new wife in Ogun State”. She therefore prayed the court to dissolve the marriage.
The Magistrate, Mr Ibrahim Mohammed, adjourned the case to June 27 for further mention.
However, in a related development, an Ilorin Area Court on Wednesday dissolved a two-year old marriage between Adijat Suleiman and Suleiman Rasheed, because of the husband’s drunken habit.
Adijat, 30, a resident of Okesuna, Ilorin, had earlier prayed the court to dissolve her marriage to Suleiman Rasheed, for being addicted to alcohol.
The petitioner told the court that her husband gets so drunk that he would vomit in the presence of his guests.
According to her, their marriage was contracted in 2011 and has produced one child, Ibrahim, age 2.
“My lord, I want an end to this marriage since my husband is not ready to change in spite of my pleading and preaching. My husband drinks all the time and returns home late in the mid-night, vomiting everywhere around the house,” she said.
