In a match characterised mainly
with the debut of Arsenal’s record buy,Mesut Ozil, the Gunners defeated
Sunderland 3-1 at the stadium of light to continue with their impressive
form so far.
The German international wasted no time in making his mark in the
English Premier League, coolly bring down a pass and squaring it for
Olivier Giroud to put Arsenal 1-0 up in the 10th minute.
Ozil’s presence was felt in the subsequent minutes, twice making
telling passes to Theo Walcott, who couldn’t beat the Sunderland
goalkeeper to score the goals.
But Paolo Di Canio’s side started the brighter of both sides in the second half, finding the back of the net to go level.
Laurent Koscielny needlessly fouled Adam Johnson in the box,and
Craig Gardner stepped up to equalise for Sunderland from the spot to
make the score 1-1.
The momentum swung in Sunderland’s favour and they had decent spells in front of goal, but couldn’t breach Arsenal’s defence.
Arsenal however restored their lead through Aaron Ramsey, who
volleyed Carl Jenkinson’s cutback to put Arsene Wenger’s team 2-1 up.
Not quite long a contentious moment came up,Bacary Sagna blatantly
impeded Jozy Altidore a goal scoring opportunity and when he wriggled
himself out, putting the ball past the line, the referee called it back
for a freekick.
Sunderland felt hard-done by with the decision not to have been
awarded the goal, and also not sending Sagna off for being the last man.
Arsenal stretched their lead further with Ramsey getting his second
of the game ,starting the move and moving into position to collect a
pass from Giroud and putting the gunners 3-1 up.
Arsenal with the win moved top of the English Premier League, pending the outcome of Chelsea and Liverpool’s matches.
